7 Tips for Efficient Sleeping – Quality Over Quantity
Posted by Jon Lee in Efficiency, Offtopic, Personal, tags: Efficiency, health, sleep, tipsSleeping can be made efficient too? That’s right — getting 10 hours of sleep is useless if it isn’t good sleep! I’m sure you’ve spent entire nights tossing and turning without actually falling asleep and waking up feeling just as exhausted as the night before. This happens to everyone but there are several methods to try to prevent this and to make sure you really are getting the best sleep you can get.
Get a Comfortable Bed
The definition of comfort is different for everyone, but I would suggest trying different beds. It’s been proven that really soft mattresses aren’t good for the spine but neither are hard ones so it’s up to the individual to find something that suits them.- Avoid sugar and caffeine right before bed
Both of these things are stimulants and won’t let your body relax properly. If you’re thirsty right before bed, water is the best bet (in fact water is the best bet for almost all situations). - Don’t exercise right before bed
If you’re going to do 50 sit-ups before you sleep, make sure you do it a few hours in advance. Exercise, like sugar, stimulates the body and hinders it from properly relaxing. - Don’t drink too much water
On that last note, drinking too much water isn’t good. Depending on your bladder size you may have to get up to urinate in the middle of the night! - Keep a good constant temperature
If it’s cold outside, stay warm; if it’s hot, stay cool. Try to keep a constant temperature so you aren’t constantly kicking your blanket off and pulling it back on. Also, you may want to avoid sleeping naked since it is harder to maintain a constant temperature without the benefit of a layer of clothing. - Ambient noises
This is another personal preference. Some people prefer music, some prefer the quiet hum of their computer fan, others prefer dead silence. Figure out what works for you and stick with it. - Maintain a regular sleep pattern
By keeping a stable biological clock, your body will know when it is time for sleep so it can prepare itself adequately. Unless you really need to pull that all-nighter, try your best to sleep at the same time every night. Waking up at the same time every day regardless of when your day actually starts is great too — my best tip is to keep your window blinds open to let in the morning sun.
With most of these points, consistency is the key. Once you’ve figured out a combination that works for you then try to replicate the exact situations every day. That way your body gets conditioned to sleep under those environmental conditions.
How do you know if you’ve gotten quality sleep?
- If you wake up on your own before your alarm goes off.
- If your joints aren’t aching when you get up.
- If you feel relaxed and ready to start your day.
- If you wake up smiling
And guess what, getting a good night’s rest can increase metabolism and help you stay in shape and lower heart disease. If all else fails, then either invest in a sleep optimization program or eat some turkey!

And one more thing that works for me: Dont read in bed, or eat in bed watch TV in bed, the bed should be your sleep refuge only, your haven for peace.
The bedroom should only be used for sleep and sex. It is not advisable to put a TV set or your computer inside the bedroom. Hope that helps too.
Another factor that disturbs good sleep is a heavy meal before bed time. If the last meal of the day is light, the quality of sleep is much better.
I’ve heard that as well but sometimes I like to curl up on my bed with a book just because it’s so comfortable…
Light snacks right before bed are recommended assuming it’s nothing too stimulating..
Some even advise no sex in the bed that you sleep. Bit extreme, that.
What is much more important is time of sleeping. Most of the days I sleep at 4 – 5 AM and wake up at 8 – 8:30 AM and it drastically affects my sleeping quality.
Ah, eating turkey. More effective than any sleeping pills.
I came home from work yesterday at around 7pm and immediately just passed out and didn’t wake up until this morning at 10am.
i am used to being awake at night and have my sleep around 8am-4:00pm. that is because i work at night. but even when i get my days off i still sleep at the same time.
is that normal?
Good advice, and sure you got to keep you biological program,as sleeping at an exact hour, and you’ll see the changes
I got a really nice bed when I got married and wow does it make all the difference in the world
Drink a glass of chill milk before went into bed and read a lite article or books before sleep. That work fine with me. Another advice for me, 30minute before sleep avoid eating junk food or meal, you get hard to fall asleep as your stomach is processing your foods.
Nice and informative post. Sleep is the most essential part of life. A good night sleep can work wonders for your next days work.
I used to eat a lot before sleeping. Thanks for the suggestions . I will really follow your tips.
Thanks for the instructions. I will follow it.
Also make sure to not have the TV on because it stimulates certain parts of the brain making it difficult to sleep.
The 6th tip is very difficult for me, my neighbours have 2 dogs and they are barking all day!!!
Ahh be careful not to suffer from constant sleep deprivation… very unhealthy!
If you’re being consistent and getting enough sunlight I think it should be okay… studies have shown people that work nightshifts are on average not as healthy but mainly due to lack of exposure to sunlight and the associated vitamins.
They say a mattress is one of the most important investments… definitely nothing to be cheap on because you spend a third of your life on it!
I would get earplugs or tell them to shut up! Better yet, get your own (bigger) dog to intimidate them into being quiet haha
These are a lot good idea. But don’t forget the warm milk. It work whe I was a kid grandmother gave it to me before going to bed.
Best
