A Rare Mistake by Apple

I think Apple is really shooting itself in the foot recently. With the release of their new firmware, all unlocked phones have been “bricked” (that is, rendered nonfunctional so it serves as a brick or a paperweight). Not only that, but any iPhone that has installed ANY 3rd party software has been bricked as well.
Proprietary much?
First off, unlocking your phone is not illegal! The DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) states that the unlocking of a phone to a different provider is completely within user’s rights! Second, as feature-rich as the iPhone is, without 3rd party software there isn’t much room for growth. Would you use a computer that only runs Microsoft products?
Apple has been almost flawless in terms of marketing and sales until now. I predict this little fiasco won’t injure them much in terms of revenue in the near future but it will leave a lot of consumers unhappy which may harm sales in the long term. Rumor has it that Google is releasing their own Google phone early some time next year. Free ad-supported phone calls anyone?
On Another Note… Did you Win an iPhone?
A little over a month ago, Gary Lee created stirs around the blogosphere when he announced that he was giving away a free iPhone. Earlier today, the winner of the free iPhone was revealed! Gary and Danielle (along with a special guest) made a video of the winner announcement. I entered the contest too, but unfortunately I didn’t win. Did you win? Only one way to find out!
By the way, make sure you check out Gary and Danielle’s new site on traffic building. It has useful tips for everyone!
