Google Pagerank: 4/10 jonlee.caThe talk around the Internet right now is the Google PageRank update has finally come albeit 2 months late. It had caused webmasters (at least those that cared anyway) a lot anxiety with rumors that Google might be dropping PageRank altogether.

PR5!
In the previous update, I gained a solid PR 4 as a starting point. This time around, my blog went up a spot from a PageRank of 4 to a solid 5 out of 10! The biggest news is that Google has changed their algorithm to penalize blogs that are selling and buying text links, causing many big name bloggers to drop to a PageRank of 3 or 4. Luckily for me (or unluckily), I hadn’t been able to sell a single text link prior to my blog redesign so I had taken it out completely since then. This might be a contributing factor to an increased PageRank but frankly, I would’ve preferred the money.

What this Means

  • More Search Engine Traffic
Pagerank has a direct effect on Google search results placement. I should be placing higher than before so naturally, organic traffic should be on the rise.
  • More advertising opportunities
I’m assuming webmasters will begin to shy away from buying and selling text links and begin to fall back on more traditional forms of advertising such as banner ads or paid-for reviews — both of which I offer of course.
  • Bragging Rights
Since many blogs dropped in PageRank while I went up, I am now finally in a position to say “I have a higher PageRank than <insert popular evil blog here>”!

That’s about it… Google PageRank seems to matter less and less with each update and doesn’t really accurately reflect the quality of a site but I’ll take what Google gave me!

Congrats on the PR5! You’ll get to charge top dollar for your ad space, now :P

  2. Hey, congrats to your PR5! Now, it’s time to show your prowess!

Congrtas on a solid PR5, if it means so much to you. But if you ask me, Pagerank is nothing but a cheap marketing tactic employed by Google to fool people for downloading its toolbar.

But since you care, now according to Google your blog is as important as Forbes, Engadget, sfagte etc, since they all have Pagerank5. You can even tell advertisers that you will now demand nothing less than what these people get.

Jon, for some reason your page doesn’t show any page rank in my Google toolbar. It’s probably something I did. Just an FYI

  6. [...] I’ve been promoting Google for free for years, I only use Adsense for monetization, I have 37k+ natural backlinks, and I’m reduced to a PR4 for linking to a friend five times? The worst way it could be looked at is as a single sponsored post, is one post really worthy of a PR reduction? [...]

  7. My underconstruction site got PR3 ?!?

  8. Omigod, so much hinges upon Google’s pagerank update, everyone is all abuzz about it.

Congrats on your position though, Cheers.

  9. It shows a PR4 still in my toolbar. Perhaps it has not fully updated yet or something. Not sure.

  11. [...] of JoyceBabu.Com jumped from PR0 to PR3. Well, this may not be as great as the PR5 of JohnCow.com, JonLee.ca or ContestBlogger.com. But I am more than happy with this. Now I believe I too have got some [...]

  12. Joyce Babu says:

Congrats! I got an increase from 0 to 3. :)

Congrats, Jon. I presume you’re not going to be selling text links here then! :D

Pagerank has a direct effect on Google search results placement.

Hmmm, I’m not so sure I’d agree with that since it can be demonstrated that lower PR sites can rank higher than higher PR sites for the same search terms. Since PR itself is only a measure, it’s the thing it’s measuring that would have an effect, if any.

If I ran a search engine, link popularity (measured by a little blue bar) would be one of many factors influencing search rankings.

  14. Congradulations. I am under the impression Google have maded the higher rungs of PageRankharder to obtain since very few people have got above a PR4, even with a good link profile and no TLA.

    PS. Like the new design.

I stand corrected. When I clicked the home link, Jon Lee dot com showed as a 5/10. Cool! I would think you’d be higher though!

I surprisingly went from 2/10 to 4/10 since the change. I’m just a personal blog with no ads that gets 100-300 hits a day. I do have a lot of inbound links though. I suspect it will fall eventually when they realize what they’ve done ;)

  16. Jon Lee says:

SEO is of course important but I believe PageRank does have SOME effect. I’ve also read that some users believe that PageRank is a measure of trust.

  17. Jon Lee says:

Hahah, take what you can get! I was surprised by the PR5 considering the ads and many outgoing links.

  18. Jon Lee says:

If that’s the case then I hope I can use this PR5 (however temporary) to my advantage!

  19. Jon Lee says:

Great list there, thanks for the add!

  20. College says:

Congratulation! There are many outgoing links. It will be very helpful for others.

  21. From what I’ve observed so far of the PR slap many sites have experienced is that it’s just a visual thing as rankings and traffic to my blog haven’t been impacted at as far as I can see and Google is still content to send hundreds of visitors my way!

  22. Sameer says:

Haha, congrats. Even my blog got a page rank of 5. And i am surprised how it got so high page rank! Check it out for more info.

  23. jest says:
