Google Pagerank: 4/10 jonlee.caThe talk around the Internet right now is the Google PageRank update has finally come albeit 2 months late. It had caused webmasters (at least those that cared anyway) a lot anxiety with rumors that Google might be dropping PageRank altogether.

PR5!
In the previous update, I gained a solid PR 4 as a starting point. This time around, my blog went up a spot from a PageRank of 4 to a solid 5 out of 10! The biggest news is that Google has changed their algorithm to penalize blogs that are selling and buying text links, causing many big name bloggers to drop to a PageRank of 3 or 4. Luckily for me (or unluckily), I hadn’t been able to sell a single text link prior to my blog redesign so I had taken it out completely since then. This might be a contributing factor to an increased PageRank but frankly, I would’ve preferred the money.

What this Means

  • More Search Engine Traffic
Pagerank has a direct effect on Google search results placement. I should be placing higher than before so naturally, organic traffic should be on the rise.
  • More advertising opportunities
I’m assuming webmasters will begin to shy away from buying and selling text links and begin to fall back on more traditional forms of advertising such as banner ads or paid-for reviews — both of which I offer of course.
  • Bragging Rights
Since many blogs dropped in PageRank while I went up, I am now finally in a position to say “I have a higher PageRank than <insert popular evil blog here>”!

That’s about it… Google PageRank seems to matter less and less with each update and doesn’t really accurately reflect the quality of a site but I’ll take what Google gave me!
