Boost your Blog Traffic – Update your Ping List
Posted by Jon Lee in Web Development, tags: ping, tips, traffic, wordpress
Everyone likes extra traffic, so here’s a way to increase traffic to your blog. By default, Wordpress (and other blogging tools) will let different RPC services know that you’ve updated your blog by “pinging” them. (RPC stands for Remote Procedure Call but that isn’t important right now.) A ping is kind of like a nudge – just a friendly reminder to check out your blog for the latest news.
By default, Wordpress pings only Ping-o-matic which then in turn pings over 20 other services. By updating this list, you can manually ping many other RPC services not included with Ping-o-matic.
Advantages
The sole purpose of some of these services is to gather all of the latest news on blogs around the world and to promote them. This of course, will drive some traffic back to your blog — not tremendous amounts though, since a lot of these services aren’t too popular. Also, this will also help your latest post get crawled and indexed faster by search engines as they will find your post faster.
Disadvantages
Not much really, except that if you ping a service too often, you might get banned. When I say too often, I’m talking about hundreds of times a day so as long as you don’t go crazy, I wouldn’t worry about it.
Updating your Ping List
In Wordpress, you can update your ping list from the admin page under Options->Writing. Here is the largest list of RPC services (87!) that I could find. I got this list from Prosperity Achiever.

There is no guarantee that all of these services are working properly; some may no longer be functioning properly but pinging them won’t do any harm.
Edit: Removed a few demographicly specific RPCs

A friend of mine noted that once he began using ping services with his blog he got lots of comment spam. He was using Drupal and couldn’t find decent spam blocking plugins at the time so he was having to set it to manually approve all comments. He doesn’t use the services any more and hasn’t had the problem much with his new blog.
I don’t know where these lists are coming from but I wouldn’t ever ping that many services.
For instance, snipsnap.org is a wiki/weblog software.
And don’t ping blogsnow.com, you might end up on a splog list.
And how long do you publish a post, with this long list? Does it take much longer time than standard one?
I am afraid Johann is right in his statement, disadvantages might be too numerous
I thought pingomatic cascaded results to other services anyway…. is that not the case???
Yes snipsnap is weblog software but it also has an RPC service. As for blogsnow, there are enough non spam-blogs pinging it that I don’t see how it could be used as a basis for determining what blogs are spam.
I don’t notice much increase in posting time, perhaps a few seconds extra at most?
Also, I did quite a bit of research before posting the list and I feel it is safe to ping these services. The general consensus agrees that you will be flagged for sping (spam ping) if you ping a service hundreds of thousands of times a minute.
Of course, you don’t have to use everything on the list but it provides a good starting point.
Ping-o-matic only cascades results to about 22 other services.
I think no matter how many services you ping, once your blog gets on to a “comment spam list”, the number of spam comments will increase drastically. Luckily for us Wordpress users Akismet is great at spam protection. There really is no way to get off this list but you could always include some sort of captcha.
I did remove a few RPCs that are demographically specific (i.e. require you to be from a certain location or use a certain CMS)
Biggest pinglist from world
But is it different, example http://api.my.yahoo.com/RPC2 and
http://api.my.yahoo.com/rss/ping or not?
Great list, added the few I didn’t have yet.
Check out the plugin available at http://www.daven.se/usefulstuff/wordpress-plugins.html
This plugin will only run the ping when you publish a post, not update it. Very useful so you don’t get listed as a spammer if you make multiple updates to a post.
Cool tip, please also consider my list of places to ping

Pinging reliable services will not increase blog spam. I too get quite an amount of spam each day but akismet is good enough for that..
Great RPC list, Jon!
The best, or longest that I had seen previously was around 55 ping services, so this one is obviously quite a step up.
I’ve copied and pasted already to my three WP blog sites!
Thanks again,
Steve
Best way I’ve found to sort out which sites are still active on the ping list is to use smart update pinger. It does two things:
(a) Stops pings when you edit. This makes the editing process much faster and prevents you getting marked as a “Ping Spammer”
(b) Shows which pings were successful. Allows you to then remove those services which regularly can’t be pinged.
Nice post
Thanks

Does the format matter when pinging these? It appears not since no one here seems to be worried. Pretty standard?
The formatting is just having each URI on a new line. I’m not sure if that’s what you’re referring to.

thanks for those helpful links, but do we have any software or portal for pinging at once ?
Eliena Andrews
Yes, Blog Pinger.
Most blogging CMS will do this automatically upon a post. i.e. Wordpress, Drupal, Movable Type etc.

Fine! I’m updating my pinglist right now
Is it actually work??
before we ping the website, is it necessary to register it first ?
I ve compared and be ready to use the 77 one, thanks for sharing.
A great tip for bloggers! One problem that bloggers have is how to bring traffic to their site. No matter how interesting your blog is, if there is no traffic to your site, it’s useless. Thanks for your advice and for giving some Ping list, am sure it would help bring more traffic to our site
I would not have imagined that there would be that many services to ping. It almost seems like there are too many and that some of them should be cut out, but it is reasonable since they are for more specific sites and types of sites.
