Comment System Upgrades
Posted by Jon Lee in Site stuff, tags: comments, pagerank, plug-ins, wordpressMy blog has been getting a lot of views and has a lot of readers, but not a lot of comments! So I’ve introduced a few new features to aid/promote commenting on my posts.
- Brian’s Threaded Comments 1.5
You can now reply directly to another person’s comment and have that comment appear nested. The plug-in can be customized to a maximum nest level. It defaults at 3 and that is what I have it at right now. There is also the option of making the text in each nest level slightly smaller than the previous. - Subscribe to Comments 2.1
This Wordpress plug-in adds a small check box on the comment form to allow readers to be alerted by e-mail when more comments appear. This lets readers to easily keep track of what other people are saying, or what replies they get. Also, it includes a subscription manager for users to add/edit/delete their subscriptions. - Show Top Commentators 1.03
In order to encourage readers to comment, the user with the most comments in the last 30 days (not last month, its a rolling count) will have their name included on the sidebar. This name will include a link to their website or blog and does NOT have a nofollow tag, meaning the Google robot can crawl it – thus improving your pagerank!
So go on! Comment your hearts out!
Edit: Looks like top commentators isn’t functional yet.
Edit 2: Got it working now!

I have been thinking about comments lately. How important is it to have commentors? How will the generate revenue for you? Even still, I agree, its nice to have people participating in your blog.
Take care,

Well I like the idea of building a community around a site – not so much for generating revenue but more for generating buzz and awareness. Those two things may eventually lead to revenue in the long run.
I’m going to download the plugin allowing commentors to reply to comments, thanks for the post.
Oh, and might I also suggest moving your feed chicklets above the page fold. This will increase your subscribers, readers, and possibly comments as well (more readers=more comments).
I like that suggestion, especially since I only recently made the chicklet buttons take up less space. (2 per row)
Brians dreaded comments is the only plug in I have ever had problems with, its very good and worth the effort, but can be a bit of a pain, depending on the template you are using….
I added these plugins about a week ago. I hope they help me grow my site over the long haul.
Very true, the more people visiting your site, the more impressions for your ads….
Another great plugin is the MyAvitars so you can display the MyBlogLog pictures!
They’ll help, the biggest why to get more visitor/comments/traffic is to get your name out there! Start interacting on other blogs and people will start to notice you!
Thanks for that suggestion! I saw that plug-in on JohnChow and your site but I didn’t know the name of it. It’s next on my to-do list
Yay for comments! Perhaps I should implement this on my blog? I don’t have much to offer people in the way of a high PR or Alexa ranking but I guess it wouldn’t hurt that much would it?
Yes, I’ve heard that a lot of templates require a lot of twiddling to get it to work. Luckily for me, mine worked without a hitch!
I think this should come default with wordpress!
It adds so much organization to the comments section even if there are only 3 or 4 comments!
[...] I talk about ways to attract comments on your blog. [...]
Awesome you got it working Jon. And I see I’m a top commentator BEFORE you activated the plugin…now that’s loyalty.
I’m a daily visitor, keep it up.
I’m going to try adding the Subcribe to Comment plugin and see what kind of affect that has on my comments. I’ve been trying to add things slowly to gauge the impact they have the site. Anyways, thanks for the list . . . i think it’s essential for every blogger to make sure they cultivate a sense of community on their sites
I agree, I usually subscribe to the comments I post regardless of what blog I’m commenting on, don’t want to leave people hanging if they have questions! Plus I love getting emails
The site looks great ! Thanks for all your help ( past, present and future !)
What plugin do you use to show country, OS and browser on comment?
FireStats
Check it out at http://firestats.cc
How did you get brians plugin to work with myavatar?
They just worked… perhaps it’s in the order you activate them?
