Google Pageranks Updated!

Google Pageranks are updated about 4 times a year and during this time, web developers around the world rejoice as they are given another statistic to judge their site’s popularity. The exact formula to calculate Pagerank is a subject of much controversy and speculation but the general consensus agrees that it is based on the number of links to your site and the Pagerank of those sites linking to yours (the higher the better). There are tools to predict your Pagerank but accuracy is limited. For example, iWebTool predicted my Pagerank to come in at 5 — close but not quite.
I started JonLee.ca just after the last Pagerank updated so it has been sitting at a Pagerank of 0 for some time. All the work I’ve done up until now has managed to earn a Pagerank of 4 (on the main page). This is quite good in my opinion and may finally get me approved for Text-Link-Ads on this blog. As for my other sites, a few of them dropped by 1 while the rest have remained the same — so no gains there.
Higher Pageranks seem to be exponentially harder to get. A few links can get you a Pagerank of 1, a few more might get you a 2. But to go from 4 to 5, or 5 to 6 requires a huge increase in linkbacks (and a higher quality of linkbacks as well). If you ever get a Pagerank of 7, you should be ecstatic. 8 and above are pretty much exclusive to the big players on the Internet. A perfect Pagerank of 10 as far as I know, is a glorious title held only by Google.com.
I’d recommend checking your Pageranks to see how you’ve done. For Firefox users, SearchStatus works wonders as described in my post about web development Firefox add-ons. If your Pagerank hasn’t been updated yet, give it a few days as it takes time for them to update all sites and for the data to propagate through all of Google’s datacenters.
How has this round of updates treated everybody?
