If setting up a proxy server over SSH is too much trouble for you, a quick and easy way to secure certain sites is to use the https protocol instead of http. Not all sites support this but I know that a number of Google applications work with both http:// and https:// protocols. For example, instead of going to http://mail.google.com add an ‘s’ and go to https://mail.google.com instead. Now your Gmail session will be encrypted with SSL!

This technique can be applied to the following web sites/applications:Secure Google!

Update your bookmarks now so when you’re using public Wifi at your local Starbucks you can feel safe about checking your mail. This Greasemonkey script will automatically use SSL for supported web sites.

If anyone knows any other sites that support both http and https, leave a comment and I will add it to the list :)
