I Live in the Most Intelligent City in the World!

Waterloo, Canada was named 2007′s the most intelligent community in the world. That’s quite an accomplishment considering the relatively small population of the city as well the 400 other cities that were in contention for the award. Here are some reasons why the city is so intelligent:
It’s Canada’s Technological Hub
The city has barely 100,000 people yet it has two major universities and is home to many technological companies; the largest being Research in Motion (RIM), the makers of the Blackberry. The CEO and founder of RIM is a graduate from the University of Waterloo and the entire business was started in Waterloo.
A full 10% of the IPOs in the Toronto stock market are based in Waterloo while investors have poured nearly $2 billion into the city over the past decade.
It has the University of Waterloo
I’m proud to call the University of Waterloo home as it is where I have spent the better part of my post-secondary education. The university is the one of the largest in Canada and frequently places first in international mathematics, engineering, computing and science competitions. It is known to some as Canada’s MIT although personally, I think we’re better.
In fact, this was one of the few universities Bill Gates stopped at during his North American “tour”, probably due to the fact that Microsoft hires many of our computer science graduates right out of university.
It has the Perimeter Institute
The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI for short) is a place where scientists and researchers from around the world get invited to go and take a vacation of sorts. There they are funded to do non-directed research meaning they can pretty much research anything they want in the company of some of the greatest minds in the world. Seminars and workshops are held frequently and they are open to anyone that wishes to go.
It will soon have Google
Even Google is now building an office here. I’ve heard rumors that it will be a fullout Googleplex complete with datacenter and Google bean bag chairs but I doubt it; I think it’ll just be an office building focusing on wireless software development.
