Google Pagerank: 4/10 jonlee.caSince the Google Pagerank update appears to be delayed (was projected for a couple weeks ago), there has been some speculation about whether Google is upgrading the Pagerank algorithm or perhaps eliminating the Pagerank system altogether.

I saw an interesting article on King Nomar’s blog which discusses a possible new “Webrank” system by Google. This is not to be confused with Yahoo’s existing Webrank that happens to share the same name. From King Nomar’s post:

Webrank will be given according to the number of relevant incoming links, quality of the content and relevant sites linking to.

This would mean a penalty to irrelevant links and ads (i.e. paid sponsored ads). I think this is a good thing since it will translate to more directed advertisements (thus a higher click through rate).

Of course, this is all just speculation and only time will tell what Google will decide. If Pagerank does get eliminated, I’m sure it will eliminate anxiety rates experienced by webmasters all around the world every three months. If it doesn’t get eliminated… well then I’m hoping for a PR5 (one up from the PR4 I got last update).

That “quality of content” could mean alot of things, how are keywords harvested from the site?

  2. Jon Lee says:

You mean how does Google harvest them? Who knows, I would suspect a statistical analysis of word frequency and proximity.

I think they also look at important html tags (title, h1, label etc.)

  3. I hope they keep the pagerank system as it is now. That’s what I’ve been aiming for when developing my blog for the last three months.

  4. John Bennett says:

Is this just a rumor started by someone or has Google come out with anything to lead people to believe this? Just wondering as I continue to wait for my first PR update.

  5. Jon Lee says:

Just rumors I think. Your guess is as good as mine!

  6. Natron says:

Pagerank update with happen at some random timing as usual. These rumors start up every time we think there should have been an update.

  8. I just hope Google will only change the pagerank system for the better…

Having to eliminate page ranking might not be possible especially when there are many people who used page ranking as a measurement of something… And probably even to start a whole new company out of Page Rank! Well, i believe somebody out there must have done this…

I think the pagerank system is sort of broken now in a way, lots of people try to manipulate it and also people who run high PR sites can create new sites with content and instantly boost them to the top a lot of times in search results.

  10. Yup mrtgage, it’s time for a new change of page ranking system!

I recently read an article quoting someone from Google that the PR system is the backbone of Google SERP and will stay. Though it will be modified to identify and eliminate paid links.

Google with never ditch their page rank…

However THEY ARE making it less important, and the “overall” theme, not just the page theme, of the website where the link is coming from much more important.

But who knows, they are changing SO often it’s retarded. =) Best we can do is just work hard with a good heart and we’ll reap what we sow!
