Is Google Ditching Pagerank?

Since the Google Pagerank update appears to be delayed (was projected for a couple weeks ago), there has been some speculation about whether Google is upgrading the Pagerank algorithm or perhaps eliminating the Pagerank system altogether.
I saw an interesting article on King Nomar’s blog which discusses a possible new “Webrank” system by Google. This is not to be confused with Yahoo’s existing Webrank that happens to share the same name. From King Nomar’s post:
Webrank will be given according to the number of relevant incoming links, quality of the content and relevant sites linking to.
This would mean a penalty to irrelevant links and ads (i.e. paid sponsored ads). I think this is a good thing since it will translate to more directed advertisements (thus a higher click through rate).
Of course, this is all just speculation and only time will tell what Google will decide. If Pagerank does get eliminated, I’m sure it will eliminate anxiety rates experienced by webmasters all around the world every three months. If it doesn’t get eliminated… well then I’m hoping for a PR5 (one up from the PR4 I got last update).
