Out of nowhere, I get an email from mediatemple yesterday saying they had upgraded their system! What a pleasant surprise!
Highlights of the upgrade include:

  • Over 800 cores in the grid – adding more CPU cores gives plenty of processing power
  • 400% increased storage performance - over 400% increase! Not sure what this means, perhaps they upgraded to faster drives – a whole bunch of 15k Savio drives maybe.
  • Improved FTP – faster FTP connection time, faster transfer and more stable connections
  • Network speed increase - faster connection between GRID components
  • New clustered DNS – increased internal name resolution speed within GRID
  • Improved E-mail all-around functionality
  • 25% faster control panel access (perhaps due to some of above upgrades)
  • Enhanced CRON system – I don’t notice a change with this one, seems like the same interface to me, but perhaps the underlying implementation has improved?

However, perhaps the number one most important upgrade is the release of their MySQL GRID container into private beta. Users can now sign up and test drive their container as described:

MySQL GridContainers (in private beta). (mt) Media Temple has completely re-architected the MySQL system on the GRID. This gives each customer their own container server with dedicated resources, an industry first, that’s running an unshared copy of MySQL. Please consult the new “MySQL Container Project Log” to learn more about this new database architecture and to sign up for participation.

I’m not going to participate in the beta, as I think the final version is going to be released early March (very soon). I’ll be plenty busy until then anyway so I won’t have much time to play with it. Sounds like the folks over at mediatemple are really trying their best to let us get our money’s worth! Keep up the good work!
