mediatemple Gift Card Grid Server Lite

Just now, I received an e-mail from mediatemple advertising their Christmas gift-card promotion where you can give a friend the gift of a year’s worth of high quality mediatemple grid-server hosting for just $95 a year.

Compared to their $20 per month Grid-Server (gs) plan, this may seem like a great deal until you look carefully and realize you are paying for a Grid-Server Lite package. What’s interesting is that the (gs) Lite package is not offered anywhere on the site! It is either a new package or something that is only available for the duration of this promotion.

(gs) vs (gs) Lite
The difference between (gs) Lite and the regular (gs) is as follows for each month:

  • 5GB Storage instead of 100GB
  • 500GB Bandwidth instead of 1TB
  • 500 GPUs instead of 1,000 GPUs
  • 5 Websites instead of 100 Websites
  • 5 Databases instead of Unlimited
  • 100 E-mail accounts instead of 1000

Good news is you get a free domain name, all the benefits of a Grid-server, the 24/7 online and phone technical support, and the right to brag to your friends that your site is hosted at mediatemple!

Even Cheaper!
By using one of the links below, you can get this entire package for just $85 instead of the advertised $95. This works out to about $7 a month — a great deal for the infamous (mt) hosting!

Use this link to get the Grid-Server Lite package for yourself for just $85 a year ($7 per month) ($10 off the current promotion — the cheapest mediatemple hosting package you can get!).

Use this link to get the regular Grid-Server package for as low as $13 per month.

  1. great tip! I’ve been looking for a new hosting service for a while for my blog. I’ll have to check this one out!

I’ve been using (mt) hosting for a few months now, and while I’m impressed with the fact that my site’s been on the Digg front page twice now and didn’t even slow down, they’ve had a LOT of downtime lately, and even right now the response time of the servers are horrible. I’m talking 5 full seconds from the time your browser makes a request until the server responds with anything.

According to Pingdom, uptime since Dec 1st on my server from (mt) is 91.28% – completely unacceptable. Average response time is 1,919ms…2 seconds to respond to a browser request.

Why would I be bragging to my friends about Mediatemple? Dreamhost has been better, and Dreamhost SUCKS!

  3. [...] Jon Lee just blogged about this new offer from MediaTemple but I thought I would mention it here is it is a good deal if you looking to get some premium web hosting for yourself or as a gift for someone this holiday season. Right now MediaTemple is offering ‘The Hosting Card’ which is the Grid-Service Lite plan and a free domain name for only $95.00 a year, that works out to just under $8.00 a month! Grid-Service Lite was a plan offered to some of the Shared Server (SS) customers when the Grid platform migration went down in 2006. I’m actually surprised that MediaTemple is actually marketing (gs) Lite as it was sort of designed to be a “grandfathered in” deal. [...]

You’re right, the Grid Server has been going through a lot of hardware issues lately. Luckily for me I’m on the dedicated virtual server so I was not entirely aware of these issues.

Good news is mediatemple has credited ALL gridserver users with free 2 months of hosting (that’s $40 per user). Throughout the whole ordeal they have documented every step and have kept users informed as to what the exact problem is. It seems that everything is resolved now so hopefully this type of hardware failure won’t happen again.

In the end, although the hosting downtime caused a lot of issues for users, I think their customer service dealt with this mini-crisis quite well!

Yes, customer service is great with (mt) – and so far I’ve received something like 4 months of free service from them for the downtime. Problem is, 4 months of free hosting that doesn’t work is like having a huge penis and being unable to get hard.

FYI, at present, the surfstation code is listed as invalid (at least with this offer), and the yearly price during registration is shown as $100.

  7. Donovan says:

The referral link above should be changed or removed. If you use the link, the non-applicable surfstation code is used instead of the code Media Temple’s uses (dec07), which they provide in the absent of a code to bring it down to the $95 price. So, as I was mentioning earlier, if use the link above, you’ll be charged $100 instead of $95. :)

I forgot to mention, the 1st domain you register isn’t free, it’s just $5. After that, the regular higher rate applies, so you’ll probably want to use Netfirms instead…

  9. Jon Lee says:

Thanks Donovan, I’ve updated the link :)

I’m on the Grid-Lite Plan. I’ve been with MT for years on the Shared Server plan (SS) and it became obsolete when they switched to the grid. When I called about installing things like Wordpress or Drupal I was told it was time to upgrade. Not willing to shellout $20/month when I’d been paying $6.95 (sweet newsToday deal) they created the GS Lite for us little guys. I’m starting to feel the limitations though, but once you hit 5 full-fledge sites $20 is only $4 per site. Might be time for the switch.

Media temple is anything but infamous. Infamous implies negative wide notion, not positive.

  12. Keith Harper says:

Jon Lee, I believe that the (GS) Lite plan was offered to existing (SS) account holders when they switched to the grid. I have a Lite plan, and I think that’s because I had been a (SS) customer for a while and they offered a slightly cheaper upgrade to me.

  13. Dom says:

Are the specs for (gs)lite published anywhere? Couldn’t find them on the site. I’d like to know if SSH access is available etc.
