Nokia n800I ordered the Nokia n800 Internet Tablet last week and just received it today. Let me tell you, this thing is nice. It’s a lot smaller than I imagined — about the size of a Nintendo DS Lite.

The main purpose of this gadget is a portable Internet surfing device. With it’s 800×480 WVGA resolution and touch screen, browsing the Internet on this is the next best thing to using an actual laptop/desktop computer.

What’s more interesting is that the tablet runs Maemo Linux (a version of Debian). With the open platform and many people developing applications for it, it can do most anything you can think of. Personally, I’m looking to install the following on the tablet once I get a larger memory card:

  • Apache (web server)
  • PHP
  • Vim (for text editing/coding)
  • Mozilla browser

That’s right… a full take-anywhere web development suite in your pocket! A more versatile but more expensive than free web development on a USB drive. Right now, the n800 is a great bargain. With the recent release of the n810 (which has a couple upgrades but aren’t worth the $400+ price tag), you can pick up a brand new n800 for well under $250!

After I play with this for a couple days, I’ll report back with an extensive review!
