Google Local Business Referral ProgramGoogle has started a new program where you can sign up to be a Google Business Referral Representative. Your job will be to go around to businesses to collect information (e.g. business hours, telephone number, website) as well as take photos to put onto Google maps.

Easy Money
Google will pay you $10 for each approved business listing you submit. An initial $2 from Google per approved listing and another $8 once the business themselves confirm the accuracy of the listing.

I’m sure each of you will know at least 10 currently unlisted businesses in your area. That’s an easy $100 right there as long as it hasn’t been submitted yet. So hurry and sign up before your neighbor does!

Google Local Business Referral Program

The Catch
Two catches, first is it’s open only to the US right now so I can’t jump on it. The second, you won’t actually be a Google employee. From the FAQ:

Will I be a Google employee?
No. Google Business Referral Representatives are independent contractors to Google, not employees. As a contractor, you’ll be paid according to the terms of the program, but won’t receive employment benefits such as health insurance or paid vacation. Your payments will be mailed to you by check and can be tracked on your personal Local Business Referrals Center.

Can this be a Full-Time Job?
Maybe for a few weeks but you’ll run out of local businesses to submit very quickly especially if other people have read about this too. So my suggestion is to sign-up and get on it quick! This is potential for big money!

    US residents only? Gah!

As soon as they open the doors to Japanese participation, I’ll be goin’ around with my camera and makin’ tons of cash. Hopefully the US Dollar will recover a bit so that the exchange isn’t a killer

  2. Jeffrey says:

This is awesome! Their’s got to be another catch somewhere, but then again Google does have some cash to throw around  I’m heading out tomorrow and making some cash!

  3. Dang

I knew something had to be wrong

Bring the scheme to Australia, Google!

How would you get the businesses to approve the listing

  4. Joyce Babu says:

    Same with me too

Why can’t they bring out the service globally at the same time. I have been waiting for joining YPN for months. :(

“Google will pay you $10 for each approved business listing you submit. An initial $2 from Google per approved listing and another $8 once the business themselves confirm the accuracy of the listing.”

I understand the $10 approval and the $8 approval, but where’s the $2 come into play? There are three values and only two approvals. How does this work? The way I see it, if you have the approval of both Google and the company you get $20. If you only have Google’s approval you get $10. So what circumstances would have to take place for you to get only $12 or $18 dollars?

  8. Jason says:

Umm … Google offers $2 initially for each business listing. The other $8 is awarded once the business confirms the validity of the listing. $2 + $8 = $10

If this was offered in my area, I’d be able to clear at least $400 without any of the businesses validating the info. Hopefully Google expands this offering soon :)

  9. I heard about this mentioned in DigitalPoint forums so thought I would come over here as it sounded rather good. It’s not quite as good as I thought now as it’s only open to the US.

Good luck who ever tries it out in the US though.

  10. Carl Mercier says:

Definitely a good way to quickly gather information. Money makes wonders, doesn’t?

  11. Little Honey says:

Another DigitalPoint visitor. I’m glad I’m in the US for this one reason, at least! Thanks for putting the word out.

  12. Travis says:

 I wrote that comment last night at 1am after I stayed up all night watching cheesy sci-fi tv shows and drinking beer.

Things are much clearer now that I’ve got eight hours of sleep. Although my head does ache just a little bit.

  13. JWB says:

I heard that Google will also make it available for European countries soon so be aware and cash in.

  14. No catch? This is an awesome deal. I gotta check this out…

C’mon it could be a full time job. There’s always some public index of newly registered companies, you can take advantages of it

  22. Florchakh says:

    - Fall out boy, it’s my company!
    - I’m afraid not, I was first!
    - You’re wrong sucker, it’s mine!

    - Could you tell me why three students are fighting in front of our general office?
    - I dunno, but I think it might be related to Google Maps…

  23. Kersson says:

It’s an easy way to make some money. However, I am not completely sure people are interested in this kind of business. Let’s see what happens.

  24. Sauna Kid says:

so you can just go taking pics of any business – isn’t there any privacy issues?

  25. Jon Lee says:

I guess the assumption is that any business would WANT to be listed on Google maps. As for pictures, I don’t see any problems of taking a picture of the exterior as long as there are no people in it. As for interior pictures, permission would surely be required before taking those.

  26. Faimous says:

This is interesting, I didn’t even know about it. But I suppose the potential for long-term employment is just not there – I don’t think this is something you could sustain for a long time without feeling bored out of your mind.

  27. Nuewire says:

great . But will the images taken with my n73 work or is there any resolution type restrictions.

  28. Jon Lee says:

I’m sure an N73 is fine, 3.1 mp right? That’s better than some digi cams out there :D

  29. Michael Rad says:

This is actually not a bad offer from Google. I think if it goes well they will move it outside the US.
