Streamline your Start Menu
Posted by Jon Lee in Efficiency, tags: Efficiency, shortcuts, tipsHere’s a little trick I use to efficiently open programs from the start menu. I add a number to my frequently used shortcuts in each directory, that way I can easily access any program simply by pressing the Windows Key, then P followed by a sequence of numbers corresponding to folders and programs.
Here’s a screenshot of my start menu — I prefer the classic menu even in XP since I find it cleaner and more useful. Of course, it also helps to have programs grouped and arranged in some sort of logical sequence with very frequently used programs available immediately in the start menu.

Alternatively, you can come up with creative folder names that all start with a different letter. However, it is important to make sure no two folders start with the same letter or number, that way pressing the first letter will automatically open the next menu instead of just highlighting it.
This will relieve some dependence on the mouse (it’s easy to miss the folder you want with the mouse) as well as keep your desktop and quick launch bar clean and clear of shortcuts. Vista users have it even better since they can directly search for a program to run after pressing the Windows key.
After using this system for a week or so, you’ll have the frequently used program shortcuts memorized, you might not even need to touch the mouse for a lot of tasks! Using a Thinkpad X41, I naturally don’t have a Windows key but I have bound caps lock to it and find it invaluable when doing everyday tasks.

Hello, Jon!
All the issues you have mentioned are quite important, and fortunately, the users now can enjoy the software of a new generation where you have the option to group the programs by categories in the Start Menu in any way you like. This thing is called Tidy Start Menu http://www.tidystartmenu.com/how_the_program_works.shtml
There is also another advanced version of this program called Vista Start Menu which offers even more features in terms of customization of the start menu : http://www.vistastartmenu.com/features.htm such Single Click Launch of any progam, zooming options, etc.
Enjoy!
These are some great tips that a lot of people may overlook. After all, most people do not spend a lot of time messing with their start up menu. But maybe they should!
Since I installed Launchy I hardly ever use the Start Menu.
Being a KDE/Linux user, I like kooldock. It allows me to easy to easily have my favorite applications on the side, plus its easier to look through the menu which is mostly presorted.
Nice! Launchy looks really cool, I’ll have to check it out, thanks!
Actually, the menu I like best is Fluxbox’s. I don’t know why, something about the simplicity and cleanliness of it is really sexy
Jon, install Launchy. I’m on Mac OS X and QuickSilver (similar to Launchy) is one of those apps I can’t live without. It makes launching programs quick and easy. I can’t go back, I’m sure you won’t either!
Two recommendations on Launchy — can’t ignore that! It is being downloaded as we speak!
I’d recommend getting a Mac, but you’d think I’m just another fanboy! lol!
[...] super handy piece of software was recommended to me by two readers, Luke and Carl. In my post about streamlining the start menu, they had both mentioned Launchy as the tool of choice for launching programs effectively and it [...]
