I saw this in an article in the New England Journal of Medicine ( Ispent the last hour trying to find an online link to no avail). Researchers at the University of Bristol in England found that drinking ice-cold water can temporarily lower your brain power by as much as 15% (about 10 IQ points on average).
This is because energy (and blood) is diverted from the brain to the stomach in order to warm the water. Although I’m sure if you’re drinking ice-cold water, brain freeze might have something to do with it.
Not sure if you believe it? Grab an ice cold drink and take an online IQ test to find out how you rate. Just remember, the next time you’re writing an exam or pulling an all-nighter, remember to drink something at room temperature to maximize your brain power!

But does this same formula apply for an ice cream too. As ice creams are also very ‘ice cold’
It’s possible! But since ice cream has a lot of sugar.. that might act as a stimulant and offset the lowered IQ? I have no idea!
Oh my, I didn’t know that but here I drink ice-cold water all the day. Certainly I’d stop or atleast lower doing that.
OMG, ice cream is one of my favour dish after meal….then my IQ must be very low now….if only take it once a while, is it ok?
I think it works with all cold things. But most people do not eat their ice cream as fast as they drink cold water. On the other side .. usually when you drink something that cold you can afford the IQ loss for the few minutes. Who needs IQ to sit at McDonalds or Burger King? At home I never drink iced drinks.
Heh, I guess I perpetually operate at -10 to INT. Who knew.
Also, can you link to the sauce?

i don’t mean to brag but my IQ is 155 and if i drink a cold drink i still feel as smart! that 10 IQ drop is just a group change before and after drinking cold water, you know what i am saying!
Thank God! It’s just a temporary effect!
Good post for those who can’t drink without ice. Not me
There’s another reason cold water is bad for you but I can’t recall what it is, I read it on some site a couple months ago. This is going to drive me nuts until I remember what it was now.
I drink water like crazy but I’m fine with this. Never been a big fan of water that was ice cold though. The ice cream question has me worried though. Maybe if you have like, coffee immediately afterwards it’ll reverse the effects.
is this true? im almos drinking cold water all the while cause cant stand fot the hot water…then my IQ is something equal to 0 la…
First of all, I need the reference of the study. Secondly we must find how the study was done and what variables did the author took into consideration and what were the ones he managed to avoid variation.
If the explanation is the lower efflux of blood in the brain, then drinking hot water and not eating (blood goes to stomach and others) will make you smarter temporally.
Please email me with the source of the article. I have full acess to NEJM, so I can read and comment better about it. Thanks!
I’m more worried about cold soda than cold water.
Haven’t had any cold soda for a long time.
Thats crazy i guess I am dumber a lot huh.
10 points? i think your already feeling the effects you didn’t even think about that u just made a post

I have to say, well actually I don’t have to but, my IQ is 162 and I’m only twelve even with my IQ my spelling isn’t perfect. Anyway those who thinks that they’ll be able to know if their IQ drop most likely has an average IQ or are under some mindless delusion that they can. In addition the affects of drinking the ice water lasts only a few minutes three to four minutes tops!
