Surf Handsfree – Lazy Web Surfing
Posted by Jon Lee in Personal, Site stuff, tags: Alexa, rankings, Surf-HandsfreeLast month I launched my site, ShowoffRankings. This month, I’m announcing the launch of another site that has been in testing for some time now. It’s called Surf Handsfree which allows you to do just that… surf the web without your hands. Why would you want to do this? Imagine a situation where you’re:
- Eating in front of your computer
- Surfing on your WebTV
- Giving your hands a break (carpal tunnel!)
- Lying in bed
- Lack of mobility of your hands (disability, arthritis etc.)
- Hands busy doing something else
How to Use
The site couldn’t be easier to use, you enter in a bunch of sites you wish to cycle through, set a timer and click Begin! You will automatically cycle through the sites one by one with the option of rewinding, stopping and fast forwarding. TiVo for the Internet!
Advanced Features
You can choose to surf pages belonging to a particular domain. For example, if you put in http://www.jonlee.ca and select “Surf 30 random pages”, you will cycle through 30 random pages on jonlee.ca — What a great way to get to know a site!
You can also choose how you would like to surf your sites. By default, you will be surfing in a frame, with the controls in a little bar at the top. If you wish, you can surf in a hidden frame (meaning you won’t see any controls) but you’ll get a full screen for surfing. Finally, you can surf in a pop-up window. This requires you to keep the control window open but an advantage of using a pop-up window is that the sites you browse are in its own window, meaning any toolbars that you have (Google Toolbar, Alexa Toolbar) will give you info about the site you are surfing instead of giving you info about Surfhandsfree.com.
Save your Settings
To prevent having to input your settings every time, you can click the hidden “Use Get” link at the very bottom of the page. This way your settings are passed through the URL meaning you can bookmark this generated URL for future reference or to pass on a list of your favorite settings and sites to your friends!
Coming Soon
I’m still working on an auto-scroll feature so you don’t even have to scroll through text… meaning it’ll be completely hands free! If you have any suggestions, don’t hesitate to let me know in the comments and I’ll see what I can do!
Disclaimer
This is not an auto-surf site. Auto-surf sites give you “credit” for the amount of auto-surfing you do of random sites and then use your credits to display your site to other people. This is an immoral way of boosting traffic and is not what this site does. You must enter web addresses yourself manually and this tool is used for your own benefit — I’m not responsible to how you decide to use it! Also, I’m not making any money off this site, it’s purely for your convenience and enjoyment.
So check it out and leave some comments!

Wow.. you’re truly always spoiling people Jon
what a great way to go dude.
I didnt realise this was actually your site… how long did that one take???
Took up a whole weekend, I had to find a good way of going through random pages. Then I added a few more features which took up another day.
Cool idea now all those one handed surfers can have two hands free
What was the problem finding the javaScript that controls the lower frame / popup???
In terms of enhancing it, you could control the depth that the spider drills down through a site, i.e. allow the program to browse sites that sites link to… or sites that they link to…
You could perhaps search for anchor text in links that contain keyword’s, so, say if i put in your domain and the keyword “graphics” I would follow links with that term in your site….
If nothing else its a chance to play with your spider code a bit
Impressed with your site BTW, the reason I did not realise it was yours was the speed in which you seemed to come back with it and the fact it was well featured with a decent css layout…
Did you do the image yourself too?
Haha I’m not great with web design but I’m not terrible either!
Yeah I made the image myself from an exercise tutorial picture teaching stretches hahah.
Hands busy doing something else …
ewww…
Get your mind out of the gutter!
Great like I need another reason to be totally lazy.
My mom’s just going to love this feature!
This is one of the best inventions ever made.
