Photogenic Stats After 3 DaysAfter just 3 days, the Photogenic Facebook Application I wrote has already gained almost 600 users. Aside from my one post about it, there was no other promotion or marketing on my part so it goes to show how viral Facebook can be.

This has led directly to a 20% increase in traffic to a thousand and one but more importantly, it has generated submissions of over 200 pictures! All this from a simple application that just displays a random picture every 5 minutes on user profiles.

Further Possible Increase?
Once the application gets accepted into the Application Directory and becomes searchable, I suspect another large jump in users. Also, I plan on adding an “invite” page to let Facebook users invite their friends to use the application. Unfortunately, Facebook has a limitation of only letting users invite 10 friends a day to use any application (to prevent spamming I suppose) but I think it will still have a positive effect.

Conclusions
Traffic on a thousand and one has been slowly declining since it peaked at an Alexa ranking of 40,000 many months ago. This simple little Facebook Application that can be written in under an hour seems to be doing wonders for the site and is better than any ad campaign or banner ad I could have purchased.

Personally, I think a Facebook application is a cheap and efficient way to boost exposure to a site as long as its “widgetable”. From discussions I’ve read on the developers forum, it appears that the most viral applications are those that are simple and focused. Great big powerful applications tend to not be as popular with users for various reasons.
