What RSS Feeds I Subscribe to
Posted by Jon Lee in Personal, tags: digg, google-reader, RSS, webcomic, xkcdReading my RSS subscriptions is a task that I look forward to doing 4 or 5 times a day. I use Google Reader (integrated with Gmail of course). Anyway, I’d like to use this post to list the feeds I subscribe to as well as to give a shoutout to some fellow bloggers.
Comics
I remember always turning straight to the comics page in the newspaper when I was young so it’s no wonder I still love reading web comics. Aside from the little tribute I gave to my favourite web comic xkcd, here are the other ones I read daily:
- Ctrl-Alt-Del
- Explosm
- Penny Arcade
- Left-Handed Toons
- The Perry Bible Fellowship
- Wulffmorgenthaler
- The Flowfield Unity – this one belongs to a reader!
Blogs
The blogging community (blogosphere if you will) is a great place to learn things and for inspiration. Here is a list of blogs I’ve subscribed to in alphabetical order:
- 43 Folders
- A List Apart
- Beyond the Rhetoric
- BlissLogs
- Blog About Your Blog
- Cash for Comments
- Catch a Falling Star
- Charles Lau dot com
- Dosh Dosh
- Everyday Weekender
- How to Change the World
- Ja Kel Daily dot com
- John Chow dot com
- King Nomar
- Lifehacker
- Mainstream Guides
- Million Dollar Journey
- Mr. Gary Lee

News
RSS is a great way to get your daily dose of news. I admit that I don’t tend to read much in terms of “real” news, I mostly read technology news and the like. That being said, here’s my list of news subscriptions.
One problem I’ve found with these news feeds is that too much content gets repeated. For example when something big happens (usually with Apple), I see the story retold on almost all the feeds listed above. Also, Digg and reddit sometimes are a hassle to read due to the sheer volume of articles posted. On a weekday, they easily provide over 100 items which can be a daunting task to skim through. On the other hand, all the blogs listed produce a much more manageable 20 or 30 RSS items a day.
What RSS feeds do you subscribe to? Any good recommendations? I wouldn’t hesitate in adding a feed as long as it doesn’t flood my reader with hundreds of items a day!
